Your Scholar's Academic Success
In our short tenure, Sci Academy has achieved an elusive goal – we have closed the achievement gap for nearly every scholar who has walked through our doors.
In 2008-2009, an average Sci Academy 9th grader entered the school year at a 4th grade reading level. In less than one year, the average reading levels shot up 3.5 grades and the school ranked first in the Recovery School District and third in the city on statewide English exams.
In 2009-2010, Sci Academy scholars replicated this achievement:
- 80% of Sci Academy scholars scored Basic and Above in English; and
- 88% scored Basic and Above in Math, with an impressive 43% of scholars achieving Advanced or Mastery in Math on the GEE.
Sci Academy’s Graduate Exit Exam scores in both English and Math were the highest in the district and 3rd in the city, only outranked by two of the most academically selective public high schools.
In addition to their academic success in 2009-2010, Sci Academy scholars achieved an average attendance rate of 95%. An overwhelming number of students elected to stay afterschool on a regular basis to attend tutoring after school. And, for the first time this summer, one quarter of our scholars held a 5-week summer internship working in an array of local businesses including hospitals, software companies and schools.
Sci Academy also built lasting and essential partnerships with advocacy and community organizations, businesses and institutions including New Orleans Outreach, teachNOLA, Teach For America, The High Bar, AdvanceNOLA and the Children’s Bureau.
My Academy Information
Sci Academy is a partnership between the school leadership, teachers, students, and families. Although the job of making decisions about school policy belongs to the Board of Trustees and the Principal, family involvement is not only welcome, but also absolutely necessary for the success of the school. All families are encouraged to participate in “My Academy,” which meets every other month.Between meetings, My Academy members may stay updated by visiting the My Academy website.
“My Academy”:
- Provides families with concrete support and concrete ideas for ways to help their children achieve
- Allows families to connect with and support each other
- Supports the school in reaching its goals
- Connects families to volunteer opportunities at the school
- Develops and implements special programs for families
- Sponsors events for the entire school community
- Helps raise money for the school
- Works with the Sci Academy teachers and administrators to examine students’ academic and social progress and discuss initiatives to improve student outcomes
Family Involvement Opportunities: Sci Academy also provides the opportunity for families to engage with the school by way of:
- Conferences between students, families, and teachers (including at least three report card nights per year and one back to school orientation per year)
- Community-wide events, celebrations, and performances, including an open invitation to every Friday Celebration
- Bi-Weekly Advisor-Family Calls
- Report card pick up and conferences
- Homework, Independent Reading, and Behavior Logs
Sci Academy is committed to providing families with the best information to help their scholars prepare for college and beyond. As a result, we provide numerous in-house trainings that address issues impacting the school community and our scholars.
