Founded on the belief that all young people can develop the skills, motivation, and perseverance needed to complete college and pursue the careers and lives of their choosing, New Orleans Charter Science and Math Academy opened its doors in the fall of 2008 determined to make a difference. We believe strongly in creating the leaders of the future by focusing on college preparation and character growth.
Our mission is to prepare all interested scholars for college success, equipped with the passion and tools to begin innovative and world-changing pursuits.
For the vast majority of our students, the academic standards befitting college preparation are entirely new. More than half of them have failed state promotional tests and more than 70% read well below the 9th grade level. Our school model is designed to both address their deficits and accelerate our scholars beyond the average, allowing them access to the college of their choice.
In our inaugural year, Sci Academy’s 9th graders had the highest proportion of students scoring proficient in the Recovery School District high schools and the highest proficiency of all non-selective high schools in the city of New Orleans.
During the 2009-10 school year, we replicated this achievement — Sci Academy’s Graduate Exit Exam scores in both English and Math were the highest in the district and 3rd in the city, only outranked by two of the most academically selective public high schools.
These results are extraordinary and are due to the talented leadership of school founder Benjamin Marcovitz and the commitment of his teaching staff. Sci Academy is an open enrollment school that has 85% free/reduced lunch, 97% minority, and 15% special education students. These students often come to Sci Academy at least three grade levels behind and get on track to graduate in four years with the realistic opportunity to attend four-year colleges and universities.
